The Yakima is 7 inches longer but they both advertise the same amount of cargo room (Thule is taller). The Yakima claws are also much more substantial than those on the Thule. The rear claws on the Yakima are actually notched for small fins, anyway, but it didn't matter. Fourth, it fit the aero racks much better than the Thule did all claws actually mount on the bars themselves instead of on the bigger plastic housing toward the outside. Anyway, once you know to NOT unscrew the claw (at least, not much), then the latch system works easier than the one on the Thule (which wasn't bad, just not as quick and simple). It's a real pain to get that little sucker back in at the right angle). Third, the claws are easier to use (unless you don't know what you're doing at first and unscrew one too far after "unlocking" it and cause the piece that catches the screw to fall out - which I did in the blistering heat of the parking lot today. Second, the Yakima is easier to open and close (handle is easier to use than just the key, it has dual hinges inside, it opens more cleanly and easily with one hand). In comparing the Yakima to the Thule, first, I think the Yakima looks nicer (although I think they both looked good). Regardless, though, I was again pleased with their helpful customer service. They will help you place it on top of the vehicle, but that's where they stop. No problems there except they will not help mount them. The folks at REI were glad to swap it out for me. So today, after doing some reading here and seeing that the Yakima SkyBox 16 could fit, I went back and bought a Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite. The plastic housing has a fin on the bottom, and I just wasn't comfortable with how the Thule sat on it. The rear claws on the Thule were spaced wide, so they mounted on the wide plastic housing toward the outside of the rear rack. However, I did not like the mounting system, and it did not seem to fit properly on my rear rack. ![]() The closest thing in size was the Thule Force L, so I bought one, mounted it on the car, and brought it home. I headed out yesterday to my local REI only to learn the RocketBox was out of stock in all local stores. I'd already been looking at boxes and decided I wanted to get the Yakima RocketBox 14. That meant we'd need more luggage capacity. This week, we have a camping trip in the VA mountains and decided to take the Crosstrek. The four of us managed to fit, but it was packed full. We've taken a couple of trips to the beach with it. We bought our DGM Crosstrek at the end of May/first of June.
